The disclosed technology creates a family of (predefined formula) spreadsheet functions which allows users to create programming loop equivalents in their regular spreadsheet cells employing familiar range functions (e.g., SUM, COUNT, MIN, MAX, etc.) with data filtering and output selection. The data can be sourced from multiple cells within the spreadsheet or a broad spectrum of numeric, date and text data not stored in a spreadsheet, including data not discretely defined. The technology disclosed can use as inputs either cell ranges or Non-Spreadsheet Cell (NSC) data formulas. The capability allows users to specify standardized or highly custom calculations capable of executing millions of loops through a (predefined formula) spreadsheet function.

The disclosed technology creates a set of technologies that formulaically and/or positionally link cell(s) to spreadsheet functions or capabilities that flex the number of cells they instantiate. Thereby automatically altering the cell formula and/or the cell position reflecting those linked/connected flex range changes. Automatically ensuring no overlap of linked/connected cells and automatically adjusting linked/connected formulas for the referenced flex changes.

The disclosed technology creates three families of (predefined formula) spreadsheet functions which allows users to functional formulas that create multiple two-dimensional repetitions of range or array function formula calculations, non-range or non-array function algebraic formulas, or two-dimension fields with complementary vertical and horizontal headings in their regular spreadsheet cells. Disclosed is a method of as you type error checking of a spreadsheet formula as a user types the formula in a cell, including analyzing, as you type, the cell contents of the spreadsheet formula and throwing an error message when the cell contents are not valid in the formula being typed. The error message identifies/emphasizes a token or group of tokens that cause the error. Also disclosed is selecting and populating into a spreadsheet formula a formulaic data field to be evaluated, starting from a position in the spreadsheet formula where the formulaic data field to be evaluated is to be populated, and responding to typed inputs and/or UI selection by displaying a list of selectable formulaic data fields with additional information that contains (non-data derived) human generated values. Upon selection among the fields, the method includes automatically populating into the starting position in the spreadsheet formula.

The technology disclosed relates to accessing external data, including massive amounts of data stored in the cloud, in spreadsheet cells: accessing external data direct via a formulaic variable in a spreadsheet, specifying an ordered progression for the accessed external data, selectively propagating data accessed using the formulaic variable vertically or horizontally, within a propagation pattern responsive to normal A$1, $A1 and $A$1 spreadsheet conventions. Two or more external data fields, responsive to the formulaic variable, have an ordered sequence relationship that nests ordering of vectors of the propagated data; and the ordering according to the ordered sequence relationship is maintained during replication by copy and paste. In another disclosed method, the external data is generated using an implicit join of data from at least two external data sources to generate multiple adjoining vectors of spreadsheet cells of data responsive to selection parameters in the formulaic variable.

The disclosed technology includes multi-way triggering of automatic replication elements selectively within and across documents, cellular atomization of spreadsheet cells and charts while retaining their desired formula, function and content properties, combining the selective multi-way replication with the cellular atomization, and employing a library capability to easily reuse automatically coordinating elements and atomized spreadsheet or tabular cells and charts.

The technology supports functions with predefined combinations and user specified combinations all capable of automating, millions of looped calculations.

The technology disclosed includes a spreadsheet application with a formula building capability that allows users to construct a complex multi-component formula piece by piece, seeing the evaluated result of each component on the way to building the whole formula. It replaces users building complex formulas in a number of separate cells, troubleshooting each part and then having to either recombine the formula parts in one cell via a frequently error borne process or creating a master cell using a hidden set of all the piece parts making it harder to then see and understand what the formula is doing and apply copy paste.
