A process for calibrating a first loop feature value estimation method using a first locally measurable loop characteristic and a first set of parameters, includes taking measurements of the first locally measurable loop characteristic for a plurality of loops, and obtaining a reference data set representing reference estimates of the loop feature value. The reference estimates are obtained by performing a calibrated second loop feature value estimation method using a second locally measurable loop characteristic and a second set of parameters. The method further includes determining calibrated parameters so as to minimize a deviation between the reference estimates and estimates obtained by applying the first estimation method to the measurements using the calibrated parameters as the first set of parameters.

A client selects a first quality level from a plurality of quality levels used to encode segments of video content for transmission over an air interface in a wireless communication system. The first quality level is selected based upon an indication of a location of the client and an indication of congestion in the wireless communication system. The client transmits a request for a first segment of the video content encoded at the first quality level.

A method is provided of configuring nodes of a telecommunications network, in which nodes react to changes in configuration of at least one of their respective neighbor nodes. The method includes the steps of: identifying a cluster of neighboring nodes, identifying which nodes in a cluster are in a frontier region adjacent another cluster, adapting the configuration of nodes in the frontier region in response to the configuration of other nodes in the frontier region, and adapting the configuration of nodes in the cluster in response to the adapted configuration of other nodes in the cluster while considering the configuration of the nodes in the frontier region as set.

An illustrative example computing system includes a parallel computing controller configured to communicate control information with a plurality of computing nodes over a virtual private network. A cloud computing controller is configured to receive a communication from the parallel computing controller. Based at least in part on the received communication, the cloud computing controller allocates cloud computing resources to facilitate data traffic communication involving at least one of the plurality of computing nodes.

It is disclosed a method of monitoring, a Multi-Protocol Label Switching network, a tandem connection of a Label Switched Path. The tandem connection to be monitored has an input node and an output node. The method comprises the following steps: receiving a first Operation Administration Management packet at the input node; and generating a second OAM packet at the input node. According to the invention, the following steps are further performed: a tandem connection header is inserted into the first OAM packet; both the first OAM packet with the tandem connection header and the second OAM packet are sent towards the output node; and the second OAM packet is identified according to the presence or absence of said tandem connection header.

The access node includes first transmit/receive circuitry with digital signal processing logic and digital-to-analog/analog-to-digital conversion logic, and second transmit/receive circuitry with transmit/receive amplifiers and line adaptation units for connection to a transmission line. The access node further includes an analog switch for dynamically connecting one of the first transmit/receive circuitry with one of the second transmit/receive circuitry according to a transmit/receive cross-connect table, and transmit/receive control logic for updating the transmit cross-connect table according to a transmit/receive traffic pattern over the respective transmission lines.

We disclose a communication system in which a cluster of network nodes is interconnected using an optical interconnect and an electrical switch engine. A bidirectional communication channel between any two of the network nodes can be set up using two bidirectional optical links established through the optical interconnect and one bidirectional electrical link configured to connect the ends of the two bidirectional optical links through the switch engine. The optical interconnect has a structure that enables the communication system to be (re)configurable for a desired level of oversubscription. Some embodiments of the communication system can advantageously be used in a data-center network.

A digital version of both amplitude and phase of a received optical is developed by employing direct differential detection in conjunction with digital signal processing. The signal is split into three copies. An intensity profile is conventionally obtained using one of the copies. Phase information is obtained by supplying each remaining copy to a respective one of a pair of optical delay interferometers that have orthogonal phase offsets, followed by respective balanced intensity detectors. The output of each of the balanced intensity detectors, and the intensity profile, are each converted to respective digital representations. Signal processing is used to develop the phase information from the digital representations of the output of the balanced intensity detector outputs.

Raman interference (also known as Raman scattering) during an idle frame transmission state in a passive optical network (PON) having radio frequency video overlay is reduced by generating and transmitting data packets having both random data and random length. Randomly varying both the packet data content and the packet length can achieve significant improvement in Raman interference reduction. The random packet data and length in effect spreads the interference across a spectrum wide enough that there is no interference effect perceptible to a television viewer.
