A method of treating a patient with a tumor, and kits ( 200 ) for such treatment. The method includes administering, to the patient, a substance ( 204 ) which activates cytoplasmatic sensors for intracellular pathogen in the tumor and treating the tumor with intra-tumoral alpha-emitter radiotherapy within two weeks of administering the substance which activates cytoplasmatic sensors for intracellular pathogen in the tumor.

A method for treating a tumor, comprising identifying a tumor as a prostate cancer tumor and implanting in the tumor identified as a prostate cancer tumor, at least one diffusing alpha-emitter radiation therapy (DaRT) source with a radon release rate between 1.8 and 2.2 microcurie, per centimeter length.

A radiotherapy source includes a base and radioactive atoms of one or more isotopes, which are attached to the base. The radioactive atoms have a radon release rate of at least 0.5 micro-Curie (μCi) per centimeter length, and emit beta radiation achieving at 2 millimeters from the base an asymptotic dose of at least 10 Gy. Additionally, the ratio between the beta radiation asymptotic dose at a distance of 2 millimeters from the device to the radon release rate, is greater than 15 Gy/(microcurie/cm).

A method of generating an emulsion for treating a patient. The method includes generating a water-based solution carrying an agent which turns into a hydrogel by addition of calcium ions. Radium radionuclides are added to the water-based solution in a concentration sufficient for radiotherapy. After adding the radium to the water-based solution, the water-based solution is mixed with an emulsifier and an oil.

Apparatus for control of a needle assemblage having a handle coupled to a hollow needle and a stylet penetrating the hollow needle. The apparatus includes a retaining bar and a connector slidingly mounted on the retaining bar that is configured to fixedly attach to the handle. The connector has a control which in a first position causes translation of the connector proximally on the retaining bar by a preset distance to translate the handle and the hollow needle proximally by the preset distance and to translate the stylet distally by the preset distance with respect to the connector. In a second position the control causes translation of the connector on the retaining bar by the preset distance to translate the handle, the hollow needle, and the stylet by the preset distance.

A method for treating a tumor, comprising identifying a tumor as a prostate cancer tumor and implanting in the tumor identified as a prostate cancer tumor, as least one diffusing alpha-emitter radiation therapy (DaRT) source ( 21 ) with a suitable radon release rate and for a given duration, such that the source ( 21 ) provides during the given duration a cumulated activity of released radon between 7 Mega becquerel (MBq) hour and 14.7 MBq hour, per centimeter length. Each DaRT source is separated from an adjacent DaRT source in the array by less than 3.9 millimeters.

A method of inserting brachytherapy seeds into a body organ includes grasping a body organ between a frame defining a large central hole and an additional element. A grid defining a plurality of apertures adapted to receive elongate applicators is placed on one side of the body organ. A plurality of applicators are passed through apertures in the first and second grids and through the body organ. The brachytherapy seeds are anchored in the organ through the frame.

A method for treating a tumor, comprising identifying a tumor as a lung cancer tumor and implanting in the tumor identified as a lung cancer tumor, at least one diffusing alpha-emitter radiation therapy (DaRT) source with a suitable radon release rate and for a given duration, such that the source provides during the given duration a cumulated activity of released radon between 5 Mega becquerel (MBq) hour and 11.3 MBq hour, per centimeter length.

A radiotherapy source includes a base suitable for radiotherapy, a manganese oxide coating over the base, and radium atoms attached to the manganese oxide coating. The manganese oxide coating may comprise manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ), manganese (II) oxide (MnO), manganese (II,III) oxide (Mn 3 O 4 ) and/or other manganese oxides. Methods for producing radiotherapy sources are also disclosed.

A method of accumulating radium radionuclides, comprising providing a first solution including thorium radionuclides and a thorium-binding extractant, wherein the first solution does not bind to radium, allowing a portion of the thorium radionuclides in the first solution to decay into radium atoms and collecting radium atoms resulting from the decay. The collected radium atoms may be included in a solution in which brachytherapy sources are dipped, in a manner which collects the radium atoms onto the source.
