Status messages are wirelessly broadcast from medical devices (e.g., defibrillators) as advertisements that don't require the establishment of a wireless connection with listeners. The listeners are configured to act on, or forward received status messages as appropriate. The listeners may optionally include supplemental information supplied by the listener device when forwarding a status message to a management server. The listener may optionally analyze received status messages to determine whether an action should be taken based at least in part on status information in the message. Actions performed by the listener may include initiating a connection with the transmitting device to facilitate uploading new information from the defibrillator, updating the defibrillator's firmware, etc. Optionally, some of the advertisements are configured as beacons. The advertisements/beacons may be transmitted using a Bluetooth Low Energy or other suitable protocols. In another aspect, advertisement based arrangements for spreading responder network incident alerts are described.

A variety of AEDs and AED/cardiac monitor integrations are described. In some embodiments, the AED is configured to wirelessly receive incident notifications from a cardiac monitor indicating that the monitor has detected a cardiac arrest in a monitored patient. In response to reception of the incident notification, the AED generates an auditory and/or visual incident alert to inform nearby individuals of the potential cardiac arrest. The AED also sends a second incident notification to a remotely located server to inform the server of the incident. In another aspect, a kit that includes both an AED and a cardiac monitor is described. The kit is configured to facilitate sending incident notifications to the AED either directly or via one or more intermediate servers to cause the AED to generate the incident alert.

Systems and processes are described that facilitate notifying PSAPs and others of emergency uses of AEDs. An AED management server receives electronic messages from the AEDs during emergency use of such AED. The server determines whether an emergency services triggering event has occurred based on various factors. When a triggering event has occurred, an incident notification is sent that directly or indirectly causes a PSAP responsible for handling medical incidents in a region that includes the reporting AED to be notified of the emergency use. Factors included in determining whether an incident notification is to be sent may include factors such as the state of the AED, the perceived accuracy of a reported location of the AED, whether PSAP notifications are enabled, etc. In some embodiments contact notifications are also enabled and/or an AED administrator may set various preferences related to incident notification for their AEDs.

Methods, user interfaces and systems are described that enable responder preferences to be considered during deployment of a public responder network. In some embodiments, a user is able to set preferences such as a mobility status, a public accessibility preference, a incidents notifications preference or a geographic preference associated with a medical device that is a part of the public responder network. In some embodiments, the user is able to select or define an area for which incident notifications are desired or are to be restricted in some manner. The described approach is well suited for public responder networks that include medical devices such as defibrillators (e.g., AEDs) in the network.

A variety of electrode pad cartridges are described that are suitable for use with a defibrillator. In one aspect the cartridge includes a housing, a tray that carries one or more defibrillation electrode pads and a presence sensor. The presence sensor configured to detect the presence of the tray at a home position. In some embodiments, the AED is configured to be activated when the tray is pulled from the home position.

A variety of dispatcher user interfaces, communications architectures, methods, apparatus, APIs and protocols are described that can help facilitate the integration of volunteer responder networks into the workflows of PSAP dispatchers. In one aspect, a dispatcher user interface facilitates activation of the volunteer responder network, as well as tracking and/or communicating notes to medical devices such as AEDs in the responder network that have accepted an incident.

System and methods for delivering defibrillator incident information to a PSAP in real-time during emergency use of an AED are described. Such information is utilized by a telecommunicator at a PSAP to provide better guidance to volunteer caregivers during potential cardiac arrest incidents. In another aspect the AED's current instruction state and optionally the time in that state is provided to the PSAP.
