Some embodiments include a barrel including 1) a muzzle and 2) one or more ports to provide recoil reduction, the barrel including a bore defining one or more rifling discontinuities arranged to prevent projectile striping, the barrel comprising: a first section containing all of the one or more rifling discontinuities; a second section rearward of the first section; wherein each port of the one or more ports comprises an egress in a length of the barrel, wherein each egress comprises an interior opening and an exterior opening, and wherein an entire portion of each of the one or more interior openings is located in the first section of the barrel. Some embodiments include an optic guard for a firearm, the optic guard including: a frame; and a bracket having a side to attach to a firearm assembly, the bracket integrally formed with the frame or fixably attached to the frame; wherein the frame is arranged to cover part of a front of an optic housing when the side of the bracket is attached to the firearm assembly. In various embodiments, an apparatus is provided to operate in a recoil environment, the apparatus including: a slide including: a receiving surface on which an optic sight or an optic adapter is mountable; wherein a rear of the slide includes a rear cover opening; the receiving surface including a slide opening contiguous with the rear cover opening. In various embodiments, an attachment mountable on the slide is provided, wherein the attachment comprises the optic sight or the optic adapter. Other embodiments are disclosed and/or claimed.

A firearm or firearm retrofit assembly may include a compensation assembly to receive gas expelled from a muzzle of a barrel or an egress in a length of the barrel. The compensation assembly may include one or more gas flow-directing sections to tune the flow of gas through the compensation assembly, which may reduce recoil. In various embodiments, an apparatus comprises a locating optic assembly mount arranged to receive an optic sight or an adapter on which the optic sight is installable, wherein the locating optic assembly mount includes: one or more locating fastener openings to receive one or more locating fasteners with threaded sections and non-threaded shoulders, wherein the non-threaded shoulders extend through the optic sight or the adapter and below a surface located below the optic sight or the adapter, each locating fastener opening including: a threaded hole to mate with the threaded section of the corresponding locating fastener; and a counter opening located above the threaded hole, wherein the counter opening is arranged to slip fit with the non-threaded shoulder of the corresponding locating fastener to align a center axis of the locating fastener with a center axis of the locating fastener openings. In various embodiments, an apparatus to operate with a firearm grip is provided, in which the firearm grip includes two openings, including a magazine receptacle and an aftly-positioned additional opening, the openings partitioned by a wall, the apparatus comprising: a retention system insertable into the aftly-positioned additional opening, the retention system including: a drive section; and an expansion section, driven by the drive section, and configured to restrict expansion to direction(s) that are not toward the wall.
