A method automatically recognizes and constrains a fastener component of a modeled assembly displayed in a CAD environment. The method detects a drag of a component dragged near the assembly, receives a preview image of the dragged component, and provides the preview image to a trained fastener classification neural network. A fastener classification inference classifying the dragged component as a fastener is received from the neural network. A fastener receptacle in proximity to the drag location is identified. A fastener mating face and a fastener receptacle mating face are determined, and the fastener is constrained with the fastener receptacle. The CAD system graphically depicts the fastener as constrained with the fastener receptacle.

A computer-aided design (CAD) system and corresponding method manage three-dimensional (3D) model view/state modifications. The method modifies a parent view of a 3D model in the CAD system based on user input provided to the CAD system. The parent view is linked to a child view of the 3D model that was created from the parent view. The method modifies the child view, automatically, in accordance with the parent view modified. Such linked views and automatic modification enable a user to change view/state of a parent view and have the changes automatically propagated to the child view/state. Further, when such propagation occurs, orientations, positions, and readable directions of annotations are also updated, automatically, saving users (e.g., design engineers) minutes, hours and even days of work on design of the 3D model.

A computer-based method includes receiving data indicating whether each of a plurality of linear metrics produced by a linear analysis of a computer model in a computer-implemented simulation violated any linear analytic assumptions. Status icons are displayed on a graphical user interface (GUI), with each status icon being visually associated with a corresponding one of the plurality of the linear metrics and a corresponding model element of the computer-implemented model. Each of the model elements is displayed on the graphical user interface in a manner that represents a hierarchical model structure of the model elements within the computer-implemented model. Each status icon provides a visual indication of whether the corresponding one of the plurality of linear metrics for the corresponding one of the plurality of model elements produced by the linear analysis of the computer-implemented model in the computer-implemented simulation violated any of the linear analytical assumptions.

A computer-based method is disclosed that includes displaying a two-dimensional view of an object on a sheet on a graphical user interface of a two-dimensional drawing environment in a computer-aided drafting (CAD) application. The CAD application is configured to provide access to the two-dimensional drawing environment and a three-dimensional model-based definition environment. The method includes receiving a user-provided annotation attached to a selected geometry on the displayed object in the two-dimensional drawing environment. A two-dimensional view inverse transformation is applied to the annotation attached to the selected geometry to produce a transformed version of the annotation. The transformed version of the annotation is attached to a corresponding geometry in a three-dimensional version of the object in the three-dimensional model-based definition environment.

A computer-based method includes generating, in a virtual two-dimensional viewing environment, a flattened, two-dimensional visual representation of an initial three-dimensional model of a wiring harness. The flattened representation has an initial visual layout in the virtual two-dimensional viewing environment. The method includes subsequently modifying the initial three-dimensional model in a virtual three-dimensional modeling environment to generate a modified three-dimensional model. The modifications include splitting a route segment or merging two route segments. The method includes generating, in the virtual two-dimensional viewing environment, a flattened, two-dimensional visual representation of the modified three-dimensional model, that visually represents either the split or the merge, and otherwise has the same visual layout as the flattened, two-dimensional representation of the initial three-dimensional model.

A computer-based method includes generating, in a virtual two-dimensional viewing environment, a flattened, two-dimensional visual representation of an initial three-dimensional model of a wiring harness based on user input. The two-dimensional representation of the initial model has an initial visual layout. The method includes subsequently modifying the initial three-dimensional model to generate a modified three-dimensional model in response to additional user input. Specifically, at least one route segment in the wiring harness in the modified model has a different length than the corresponding route segment in the initial model. The method then includes generating, in the virtual two-dimensional viewing environment, a flattened, two-dimensional visual representation of the modified three-dimensional model. The flattened two-dimensional visual representation of the modified model has the route segment length of the modified three-dimensional model but otherwise preserves the visual layout of the flattened, two-dimensional representation of the initial three-dimensional model.

An automatic volume generation method during trim setting of a modeled object receives geometric data for intersecting faces, computes intersecting curves, splits the faces along the curves, and merges manifold edges to create expanded shells. Shells with non-boundary edges are pruned, and minimum volumes formed by the pruned shells are identified and indicated on a graphical user display.

A computer-based method is disclosed of wrapping a two-dimensional (2D) sketch onto a three-dimensional (3D) model. The method includes placing the 2D sketch onto a 2D grid, transforming the 2D grid to an initial location relative to the 3D model, mapping the 2D grid onto the 3D model to produce a 3D grid wrapped around the 3D model, evaluating the 2D sketch onto the 3D grid to produce a 3D image wrapped around the 3D model, wherein the 3D image wrapped around the 3D model corresponds to (e.g., has a similar appearance to, and was generated from) the 2D sketch, and creating one or more curves on the 3D model by projecting the 3D image onto the 3D model.

A computer-based method is disclosed automatically creating one or more model-based definition (MBD) dimensions for a three-dimensional model based on one or more sketch dimensions. The method includes enabling a user to select dimensional information from a sketch to be designated as critical sketch dimensional information, designating the selected dimensional information from the sketch as critical sketch dimensional information, mapping the critical sketch dimensional information to a related face of a 3D model derived from the sketch, and executing a dimensioning tool to annotate other portions of the 3D model with product manufacturing information (PMI) while automatically incorporating dimensional information based on the critical sketch dimensional information to the related face in the 3D model for MBD.
