A biological fluid processing device includes pump and valve systems, a controller, and an optical detection assembly. During a biological fluid processing procedure, the controller controls the operation of the pump and valve systems to separate a cell-containing fluid from the blood of a blood source and controls the optical detection assembly to emit light through the cell-containing fluid. The controller receives signals from the optical detection assembly that are indicative of the intensity of light that has passed through the cell-containing fluid. The controller receives or calculates an adjustment factor that is derived from historical data reflecting a cell collection procedure previously executed for the same blood source in which the same type of cell was collected. The controller determines an adjusted cell concentration of the cell-containing fluid based at least in part on the signals from the light detector and the adjustment factor.

Systems and methods are provided for improving efficiency and quality of plasma being removed from a blood separation chamber. The system includes a separation chamber in which plasma is separated from cellular blood components, a pump for moving the plasma and an outlet line for removing the separated plasma from the blood separation chamber. An optical sensor assembly is configured to monitor the blood separation chamber and measure an interface position between the separated component and the plasma, and to generate an output indicative of the measured interface position. A controller is programmed to utilize a lipid concentration input of the blood and to set an original lipemia offset, a lipemia threshold and lipemia final setpoint from a predetermined database, and to use a proportional-integral-derivative control loop to assess the actual interface position plus the lipemia threshold to adjust and achieve a final lipemia setpoint for use during separation procedures.

A sterile connection device includes first and second carriages, each defining a portion of a first dock and a portion of a second dock. A first blade is associated with the first dock, while a second blade is associated with the second dock. When a pair of tubes is received in only the first dock, the tubes are cut using the first blade, then joined, and then a single replacement blade is moved into association with the second dock, which moves the second blade into association with the first dock and removes the first blade from association with the first dock. When a pair of tubes is received in each dock, the tubes are cut using the first and second blades, then joined, and then two replacement blades are moved into association with the docks, which moves the first and second blades out of association with the docks.

A blood processing system includes a reuseable processing device and a single use fluid flow circuit. The reuseable hardware component includes a pump system, a valve system, and a centrifuge. The reuseable hardware component further includes a controller and holders for collection containers. The disposable fluid flow circuit includes a plurality of collection containers, a processing chamber received by the centrifuge and a plurality of conduits fluidly connecting the components of the fluid flow circuit. The controller is configured to command the pump system and the valve system to cooperate to convey whole blood from a blood source to the processing chamber and execute at least one blood processing procedure. The holders are configured so that the collection containers remain upright during the duration of the at least one blood processing procedure.

A fluid separation device includes a centrifugal separator configured to receive a centrifugal separation chamber of a disposable fluid flow circuit, a pump system configured to convey a fluid into the centrifugal separation chamber and to remove a separated fluid component from the centrifugal separation chamber via an outlet, a color-based interface monitoring system configured to determine an interface position between separated fluid components continuously flowing through the centrifugal separation chamber based on dominant wavelength measurements of layers of separated fluid components during a centrifugal separation procedure, and a controller configured to measure the dominant wavelengths of the layers, calculate a duration as a color time for each measured dominant wavelength, set target color times, calculate error signals and calculate control signals to adjust the pump system to control the flow rate and interface position.

A blood donation collection system includes a blood collection device configured to perform an apheresis function to collect blood components. A database stores records for a plurality of blood donors. A processing circuit is configured to display data from a plurality of the records on a display screen, run a collection optimization algorithm based on blood center inventory level and past donation history data to make a recommendation for a blood collection procedure, and display the recommendation. The processing circuit is configured to receive a user selection of the recommendation for the blood collection procedure and send an instruction to collect a blood component to the blood collection device. The processing circuit is configured to monitor the collection by the blood collection device.

A system and method for collecting plasma comprises a control circuit configured to control operation of the system, the control circuit configured to receive one or more donor parameters. The control circuit estimates a physiological fluid amount of the donor based at least in part on the one or more donor parameters and calculates a target amount of plasma product comprising raw plasma and anticoagulant by multiplying a prestored constant by the estimated physiological fluid amount. The control circuit controls the system to operate draw and return phases to process whole blood into plasma product until a measured amount of plasma product in the collection container meets the target amount of plasma product.

Systems and methods are provided for monitoring and dynamically adjusting the operation of a pneumatic pump. The pump is controlled to alternately apply an initial negative pressure and an initial positive pressure to a flexible diaphragm of a pump chamber to draw fluid into the chamber and then convey the fluid from the chamber. The initial pressures are selected to be the minimum negative pressure at which the chamber is expected to completely fill during application of negative pressure to the diaphragm for an inflow duration and the minimum positive pressure at which the chamber is expected to completely empty during application of positive pressure to the diaphragm for an outflow duration. If a complete fill and/or a complete empty is not achieved, then the appropriate initial pressure is increased in order to arrive at the minimum pressures at which a complete fill and empty are actually achieved.

Receptacles for use in fluid lines of aliquot fluid circuit in a fluid distribution system and method of treating air bubbles in fluid lines of an aliquot fluid circuit in a fluid distribution system are disclosed therein. The receptacle is configured to trap and remove gas (e.g., air bubbles) that flows into the receptacle from the fluid lines. The receptacle is in fluid communication with a product (aliquot) container.

A blood separation device includes a pump system, a separator, and a controller. The controller is programmed to execute a blood separation procedure including a red blood cell collection stage in which blood is conveyed into the separator, red blood cells are separated from the blood in the separator, and the separated red blood cells are conveyed from the separator into a collection container. The red blood cell collection stage is ended when a target volume of blood has been separated in the separator. The controller then determines a percentage of the red blood cells from the target volume of blood that have been collected in the collection container based on the volume of red blood cells and the hematocrit of the fluid in the collection container, a volumetric flow rate of pure red blood cells in the blood conveyed into the separator, and the procedure time.
