Methods and apparatus for creating an anastomosis or fistula between the gallbladder and an adjacent organ are disclosed. First, a parent magnet, typically a permanent magnet, is deployed in the stomach, small intestine, or another organ adjacent to the gallbladder, and a mating daughter material is deployed in the gallbladder in order to create a magnet-compression anastomosis. The gallbladder may then be ablated or otherwise functionally inactivated through the anastomosis. Another aspect of the invention relates to an all-in-one surgical kit that contains all the necessary specialized tools for a surgeon to perform the procedure.

A magnetic compression anastomosis device comprises a first multipiece internal vertebrae support structure including a first set of magnets attached to an outward-facing side of the first multipiece internal vertebrae support structure; and a second multipiece internal vertebrae support structure including a second set of magnets attached to an outward-facing side of the second multipiece internal vertebrae support structure, wherein the first and second multipiece internal vertebrae support structures are attached together in a sandwich configuration with an inward-facing side of the first multipiece internal vertebrae support structure facing an inward-facing side of the second multipiece internal vertebrae support structure and the magnets on the outward-facing sides of the magnetic compression anastomosis device.

Compression anastomosis devices having a plurality of distinct pressure profile zones on the surface of the device. The anastomosis devices may be comprised of a plurality of magnetic connecting members arranged in an annular geometry, e.g., a polygon or circle. The anastomosis device may also be a continuous, non-segmented magnet, or other compression anastomosis device. The compression anastomosis device is deployed into a body lumen, e.g., endoscopically and/or laparoscopically, at a target site. A second compression anastomosis device is placed at an adjacent target site in an adjacent lumen. Certain embodiments include a self-contained “cartridge” style device that is designed to work with laparoscopic robotic surgery systems, e.g., to be manipulated or actuated by the robotic surgery system to deliver devices intended to create or assist in the creation of magnetic-based compression anastomoses in the GI tract. Embodiments may include a cartridge, a series of cartridges, or other delivery method for delivery of magnetic anastomosis devices and related devices such as otomy formation/access devices (e.g., cutting or energy-based devices), otomy control devices (e.g., a grommet, or other otomy control device), implants (e.g., polymer or shape-memory material implants), etc. using surgical robots. The cutting or energy-based otomy formation features may be integral to the cartridge assembly. Additionally, the cartridge housing may be comprised of a material capable of conducting RF energy.

Various embodiments incorporate an “end effector” in a magnetic anastomosis device system. The end effector is located between the handle of an endoscope or laparoscope and the distal end of the catheter. The end effector engages with and secures the magnetic anastomosis device assembly within a body lumen. The end effector is able to hold a magnetic device or devices with a tensile strength of 0-10 lbs. The end effector is small enough that two instruments of 1.8 mm diameter or smaller may be placed in a 3.7 mm working channel of an endoscope.
