System and methods for controlling a laser light source of a lithotripsy device to fragment or break a target object are disclosed. An exemplary system includes a controller that can perform one or more iterations of a first process and one or more iterations of a second process. The first process includes steps of selecting at least one variable operating parameter of a laser light source of a lithotripsy device, determining a value of each of a plurality of base settings of the at least one variable operating parameter selected, and selecting one of the plurality of base settings based on signals received from the target in response to laser irradiation according to the value of each of the plurality of base settings set. The second process includes controlling the laser light source based on the one of the plurality of base settings selected.

A system and processing techniques for simultaneously analyzing multiple imaging modalities. The discussed technique can include capturing a combined image stream including a first modality stream and at least a second modality stream. The technique continues by analyzing the first modality stream with a first analysis module and, concurrently, analyzing a second modality stream with a second analysis module. The combined image stream can be generated using timed lighting modalities to generate interleaved image streams or by extracting narrow color bands from a primary color sensor.

Various embodiments disclosed relate to a device and methods for electrosurgery, where the device end effector includes an anti-smoke layer. The present disclosure includes a device having first and second electrodes that include the anti-smoke layer, which can be a hydrophobic layer to aid in reduction of smoke production during operation.

An end effector assembly of a tissue resection device may include a first cut guide including a first support surface that extends from a first proximal end portion to a first distal end portion including a first outer distal portion, and a second cut guide located around the first cut guide. The second cut guide may include a second support surface that extends from a second proximal end portion to a second distal end portion having a second outer distal portion. The first outer distal portion may be located distal of the second outer distal portion and the first outer distal portion may also be located farther laterally from the longitudinal axis than the second outer distal portion. The end effector assembly may also include a cutting device located between the first and second cut guides.

Electrosurgical devices that reduce surgery time while still adhering to surgical standards are provided. An electrosurgical device can include a tripolar configuration. A primary electrode can be used to generate a vapor pocket. A secondary electrode can be activated after the vapor pocket is generated. The vapor pocket can be steered to be between the primary and secondary electrodes and a surgery target.

A surgical instrument with a handle for a surgical instrument is provided, comprising a first arm and a second arm, wherein at least one of the arms being movable with respect to the other between an open and closed position. An end effector such as a pair of opposing jaws for grasping tissue may be disposed at the distal end of the two arms. At the proximal end of each arm is a finger loop, or some other suitable means for holding by the handle, which are used to actuate the arms between the open and closed position. At least one of the finger loops is arranged to pivot about the longitudinal axis of the arm from which it extends, for example, the finger loop may be connected to the arm by a hinged connection, or any other suitable connection for enabling the finger loop to be pivotably rotated.

A method of treating a calculi mass can include using an ultrasonic probe to produce acoustic energy and fragment the mass. The method can include varying the frequency at which fragmentation occurs to treat the mass with a resonant frequency. The ultrasonic probe can have a distal tip for contact with the mass, where the tip has a morphology for concentrating stress on the mass. The ultrasonic probe can have two or more ultrasonic horns to allow for higher voltage and power levels.

Disclosed embodiments include apparatuses, systems, and methods for vaporizing a conductive fluid at or adjacent a reference point. In an illustrative embodiment, an apparatus includes a primary electrode extending to a first distal end positionable adjacent to a reference point and having a first proximal end selectively couplable with a first pole of a power source. The primary electrode defines a lumen therein and defines at least one opening to the lumen within a distal range adjacent the first distal end. A secondary electrode extends through the lumen of the primary electrode and has a second distal end extending into the distal range and a second proximal end selectively couplable with a second pole of the power source. The secondary electrode is electrically insulated from the primary electrode except within the distal range, where a conductive fluid is receivable within the distal range so as to be in electrical contact with the primary electrode and the secondary electrode. The conductive fluid is vaporizable at the distal range responsive to application of power across the first pole and the second pole of the power source and vaporized conductive fluid is expellable through the at least one opening.

A surgical system for treating tissue, the system comprising a surgical device and a control system. The surgical device can include an end effector and a sensor. The end effector can include an active electrode for treating tissue. The sensor can be configured to generate a data signal corresponding to a characteristic of the end effector or the tissue. The control system can be operably coupled to the sensor. The control system can be configured to deliver power to the active electrode and can be configured to adjust the power during a period of time that the data signal is received by the control system.
