A microwave motion detection system and lighting applications. Certain types of lighting devices turn on/off and may respond to certain triggers (e.g., motion-activation, dusk-to-dawn, etc.), etc. Such lighting devices may be battery powered and have minimal on-board circuitry. Coordinating these lighting devices together to provide zoned lighting functionality has not been commercially successful. Various aspects of the present disclosure are directed to “smart enough” lighting solutions. Smart enough lighting solutions may include link-based connectivity that enables coordination between peer lighting devices. The decentralized system may enable groups of smart enough lighting devices to communicate salient events (triggering conditions and operational parameters) across a mesh network, without centralized coordination. For example, each of the smart enough lighting devices may use point-to-point communication protocols to directly communicate with its peer devices, relaying information throughout the group.

A microwave motion detection system and lighting applications are disclosed. Time slicing and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques are used to improve efficiency in microwave motion detection sensors. Systems employing motion detection may control the detection of irrelevant motion with shielding and changing the power of the microwave motion detection sensor. Distance-based zones may be designated, and motion may be detected in particular zones. Different device operation may be performed based on motion detection in different zones. In lighting applications, varying device operation may include varying the direction, amount, or duration of light output. Device operation, when motion is detected, may also be based on the time of day, user preference, and power status parameters.

A multimode lighting system is disclosed. Due to industry standards, manufacturers of lighting devices are incentivized to create high initial light outputs that drop off quickly. Portable lighting devices with multiple modes of operation that can maximize light output and runtime according to industry standards (e.g., FL-1) as well as other lighting modes with more consistent light output over the device runtime. Lighting modes may be adjusted automatically based on sensor input. In an extreme mode, light output may be adjusted based on the temperature of the lights. Automatic modes may be adjusted based on ambient lighting or distance to a target. Lifecycle adjustments may be made to output current levels to obtain consistent light output throughout the lifecycle of lights by adjusting lighting based on accumulated usage.

The broad view headlamp includes a plurality of light sources that illuminate an area in front of the headlamp, an area adjacent to each side of the headlamp, and an area below the headlamp. The headlamp includes a number of lighting modes, such that any one of the light sources can be operated individually or in combination with any one or more of the remaining light sources. The headlamp housing has multiple lighting compartments, each having one or more light sources disposed therein. Each compartment includes an optical lens. The various light sources, together with the optical lenses, allow the headlamp to illuminate a view area extending to, at least, the outer boundaries of the far peripheral vision of the human eye, i.e., 110 degrees to the right and left of center. Thus, the total combined view area illuminated by the headlamp is at least 220 degrees.

A flashlight assembly that includes a tubular main body portion, a tail portion that is removable from the tubular main body portion, a battery assembly, and an alignment system. The main body portion and tail portion cooperate to define a battery assembly interior. The tail portion includes a first charging opening that communicates the battery assembly interior with the exterior of the tail portion. The battery assembly is positioned in the battery assembly interior and includes a battery housing defining a battery housing interior, a rechargeable battery cell disposed in the battery housing interior, and at least a first charging receptacle associated with the battery housing. The alignment system includes one of a first protrusion or a first recess associated with the battery housing and the other of the first protrusion or the first recess associated with the battery assembly interior. The first protrusion is received in the first recess and the first charging receptacle is aligned with the first charging opening.

A flashlight assembly that includes a tubular main body portion, a tail portion that is removable from the tubular main body portion, a battery assembly, and an alignment system. The main body portion and tail portion cooperate to define a battery assembly interior. The tail portion includes a first charging opening that communicates the battery assembly interior with the exterior of the tail portion. The battery assembly is positioned in the battery assembly interior and includes a battery housing defining a battery housing interior, a rechargeable battery cell disposed in the battery housing interior, and at least a first charging receptacle associated with the battery housing. The alignment system includes one of a first protrusion or a first recess associated with the battery housing and the other of the first protrusion or the first recess associated with the battery assembly interior. The first protrusion is received in the first recess and the first charging receptacle is aligned with the first charging opening.

A portable lighting device control module configured to intuitively adjust lighting operations of a portable lighting device by interpreting real-time user gestures and external conditions of the portable lighting device to modify lighting operations in response thereto. The control module installed within a portable lighting device may be configured to permit automatic dimming of front-end LEDs, enable a low power standby mode in absence of motion being detected, automatic mode adjustments in response to low battery determination, adjustment to lantern mode when a bump gesture is detected, continuous alternation between modes within lantern mode by detecting subsequent bump gestures, exiting lantern mode by detecting orientation, locking the lighting operation to a specific mode by determining orienting as either upwards or downwards, switching between modes by performing twist and return gestures, switching between modes by performing whip gestures, instantaneously dimming the light intensity by twisting the portable lighting device.

Touch-based protective lighting system and methods may be used. Portable lighting devices and/or modes of operation may pose safety risks. High-lumen output, focused light output, and/or overheating components may damage, burn, or ignite surrounding materials or the user. Various modes of operation of the portable lighting device may include modes designed to increase the safety of the portable lighting device. In certain operating modes or configurations, user touch/presence/control, distance to an illumination target, temperature of an illumination target, and/or device temperature may be used to determine whether to use the operating mode or instead to enter a protective/safe mode. Safe mode may be characterized by a lower light output/power mode or may power off the portable lighting device.
