A reconfigurable optical add and drop multiplexer (ROADM) system is provided. The ROADM system may include a switching system which includes at least one first WSS optically coupled to a tapping coupler and configured to receive an input optical signal from a first circulator, transmit a drop optical signal to a demultiplexer to drop one or more first wavelength channels, and output a through optical signal. The switching system may also include at least one second WSS optically coupled to the at least one first WSS and a multiplexer and configured to receive an add optical signal to add one or more second wavelength channels, receive the through optical signal, and output an output optical signal to a second circulator, and at least one OCM configured to monitor the input optical signal and the output optical signal.

Apparatus for routing optical wavelengths over one or more optical fibers from a first physical site to a second physical site. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, an optical apparatus comprises a plurality of first optical interfaces; a plurality of second optical interfaces; a plurality of optical wavelength multiplexers operable to multiplex a first set of wavelengths from a plurality of optical transceivers; a plurality of optical wavelength demultiplexers operable to demultiplex a second set of wavelengths to the plurality of optical transceivers; and a singular wavelength-switching device operable to individually switch wavelengths of the first set of wavelengths from the plurality of optical wavelength multiplexers to the plurality of first optical interfaces and to the plurality of optical wavelength demultiplexers, and operable to individually switch wavelengths of the second set of wavelengths from the plurality of second optical interfaces to the plurality of optical wavelength demultiplexers.

An optical device is provided that incorporates twin wavelength selective switches (WSSs), is compact, and avoids using a Wollaston prism. Additionally, the path lengths traversed by wavelength components through each WWS may be the same. The optical device may include a first subset and second subset of optical ports, where each of the first and second subsets can operate as an independent WSS. An optical arrangement of the optical device may support optical coupling between (i) any ports in the first subset of ports for light in a first polarization state and (ii) any ports in the second subset of ports for light in a second polarization state. The optical device may further include beam directing optics for coupling wavelength components of an optical beam from a focusing element to a programmable optical phase modulator and from the programmable optical phase modulator to the focusing element.

A reconfigurable optical add and drop multiplexer (ROADM) system is provided. The ROADM system may include at least one switching device configured to route optical signals through the ROADM system. Furthermore, each switching device may include a wavelength selective switch (WSS) configured to receive a plurality of input optical signals at a plurality of input ports and transmitting a first output optical signal. Moreover, each switching device may include a loading device optically coupled to the WSS, where the loading device is configured to receive the first output optical signal and a second signal, and the loading device is configured to transmit a second output optical signal based on the second signal and the first output optical signal received from the WSS.

Techniques are provided for identifying and monitoring connections in an optical system. A plurality of optical ports is configured to receive a plurality of optical links that couple with one or more remote optical devices. At least one light source generates identification (ID) signals. At least one optical element configured to direct the ID signals into transmission paths from the source optical device to the remote optical device/s over the plurality of optical links. The remote optical device/s include one or more optical elements that direct the ID signals through a set of WDM filters and returns the ID signals. At least one optical element directs returned ID signals to an optical channel monitor. At least one microprocessor configured to execute control instructions to generate the ID signals and process one or more outputs of the optical channel monitor in response to the returned ID signals to identify the plurality of optical links.

A method for modulating signal quality of an optical modulation communication system comprising an optical modulating device is disclosed herein. An optical modulating device includes an optical splitter, an optical phase modulator and an optical combiner. The optical splitter splits an inputting optical signal by an optical splitting ratio to generate a first split optical signal and a second split optical signal. The optical phase modulator phase modulates the first split optical signal and the second split optical signal to respectively generate a first modulating optical signal and a second modulating optical signal. The optical combiner combines the first modulating optical signal and the second modulating optical signal by a combining ratio to generate an outputting optical signal having a desired chirp, the combining ratio being equal to the optical splitting ratio, the combining ratio being a positive number, and being less than one or more than one.

An optical modulating device of the present disclosure includes an optical splitter, an optical phase modulator and an optical combiner. The optical splitter splits an inputting optical signal by an optical splitting ratio to generate a first split optical signal and a second split optical signal. The optical phase modulator phase modulates the first split optical signal and the second split optical signal to respectively generate a first modulating optical signal and a second modulating optical signal. The optical combiner combines the first modulating optical signal and the second modulating optical signal by a combining ratio to generate an outputting optical signal having a chirp, the combining ratio being equal to the optical splitting ratio, a value of the combining ratio being a positive number, and the value being less than one or more than one.

The present disclosure provides a photonic integrated circuit chip. The photonic integrated circuit chip comprises a plurality of connection ports, multiple polarization beam splitting structures, a photodetector structure, an interleaver and a modulator. The plurality of connection ports are used to receive a plurality of first optical signals to the photonic integrated circuit chip. The multiple polarization beam splitting structures each are used to split the first optical signal passing through the polarization beam splitting structure into a first mode optical signal and a second mode optical signal. The photodetector structure comprises a first component for split beam and a second component for split beam. The interleaver is used to transfer the first mode optical signal or the second mode optical signal to the second component for split beam. The modulator is used to transfer second optical signals with different wavelengths to the interleaver. The interleaver further transfers the second optical signals to the different connection ports according to the different wavelengths of the second optical signals.

An optical transmission device includes: a control module generate a control signal output which includes a slope adjust signal and a bias voltage offset adjust signal according to an input signal indicating a dispersion amount an electrical level adjust signal; a multi-level pulse amplitude modulator; and an asymmetrical optical modulator which is controlled by the slope adjust signal to be operated at one of a positive slope and a negative slope of a transfer function of the asymmetrical optical modulator itself, and is controlled by the bias voltage offset adjust signal of the control signal output to offset a bias voltage point of the asymmetrical optical modulator itself from a quadrature point of the transfer function, and modulates the multi-level pulse amplitude modulation signal to an optical signal to generate an optical modulate signal having a chirp.
