A system for compressing and strapping loads with press-type strapping machines having improved platen control is provided. The system includes first and second strapping machines each configured to compress and strap a load. The first strapping machine applies a compressive force to the load until a target compressive force is reached and then straps the load. The second strapping machine compresses the load until the height of the load is substantially the same as the height of the load when the first strapping machine strapped the load. The second strapping machine then straps the load. The system ensures the height of the load is substantially the same during each strapping operation.

Various embodiments of the present disclosure provide a stretch-hood machine and method of operating a stretch-hood machine to wrap an item with tubular film. The method includes drawing tubular film from a roll of film and forming a first seal section at a first end of a section of the tubular film, where the first seal section extends across only a portion of a width of the tubular film so as to provide a partial seal with a first opening at the first end of the section of tubular film. Using reefing devices, the tubular film is lowered around the item to wrap the item within an interior of the tubular film. The first opening at the first end of the section of tubular film provides access between the interior of the tubular film and the exterior environment.

Various embodiments of the present disclosure provide a strapping tool configured to tension metal strap around a load and, after tensioning, attach overlapping portions of the strap to one another by cutting notches into a seal element positioned around the overlapping portions of the strap and into the overlapping portions of the strap themselves.
