A trailer monitoring system includes a range sensor facing a rear direction and a camera monitor system, which includes a first mirror replacement assembly having a housing supporting a rear facing camera. One or more controllers are in communication with the range sensor, with the one or more controllers identifying an existence of a trailer surface based on a reading from the range sensor. In accordance with a detection of the trailer surface, the one or more controllers activate the camera monitor system for trailer monitoring.

A first processor is connected to a first filter on a tractor and receives at least one control signal from at least one vehicle control. The first processor communicates the control signal to the trailer component. A second processor is connected to a second filter on a trailer. The second filter is interconnected between the second processor and the trailer component. A sensor on the trailer is connected to the second processor and generates a sensor signal. A wiring harness communicates with the first filter and the vehicle control on the tractor and with the second filter and the trailer component. The wiring harness has common wires that carry the control signal from the first filter to the trailer component via the second filter. The common wires carry the sensor signal transformed by the second processor from the second filter to the first processor via the first filter.

A method for operating a camera monitor system includes receiving at an electronic control unit (ECU) images of an environment surrounding a commercial vehicle from a first camera and a second camera. Based upon detection of a fault condition related to the first camera, the first image feed is replaced on the display with a synthetic view generated based upon sensor signals from at least one distance sensor. A camera monitor system (CMS) includes: a first camera; a second camera; a first display; a second display; at least one distance sensor; and an ECU including at least one processor and at least one storage. Based on detection of a fault condition related to the first camera, a first image feed on the first display is replaced with a synthetic view generated based upon sensor signals from the at least one distance sensor.

A method for a camera monitor system (CMS) includes utilizing at least one camera to obtain images of an external environment of a commercial vehicle and, based on detection of a trigger event, commencing display of one or more images from the at least one camera on a portion of an instrument cluster electronic display. A method for a camera monitor system (CMS) and a camera monitor system (CMS) are also disclosed.

A method of determining a trailer trajectory for a trailer includes the steps while the trailer is moving: determining a trailer location based upon at least one captured image, determining a trailer angle change rate based upon the at least one captured image, determining a trailer trajectory based upon the trailer location and the trailer angle change rate, and displaying an overlay related to the trailer trajectory. While the trailer is below a threshold speed the method includes the steps of: determining a steering change, revising the trailer trajectory based upon the steering change, and displaying a modified overlay related to the trailer trajectory based upon the steering change.

A method of assisting a reversing maneuver for a tractor trailer includes determining a predicted trailer path based at least in part on a steering angle of a tractor, identifying a position of an adjacent object adjacent the trailer using ultrasonic sensors, and identifying a state of the predicted path as one of a correct state, an incorrect but correctible state, and an uncorrectable state. The state is obtained by determining if the predicted path results in a portion of the trailer intersect with the position of the at least one adjacent object. After determining the state, the method identifies a steering angle correction capable of adjusting the predicted path such that no portion of the trailer intersects the adjacent object.

A method for a camera monitor system (CMS) includes utilizing a camera mounted to one of a tractor and a trailer of a commercial vehicle to record an image of the other of the tractor and the trailer; comparing an attribute of the other of the tractor and the trailer in the image to a reference attribute corresponding to a reference image; and, based on the attribute and the reference attribute differing by more than a predefined threshold, determining that the trailer is unevenly loaded, and providing a notification to an occupant of the commercial vehicle in response thereto. The comparing and providing a notification are performed by an electronic control unit of the CMS. A camera monitor system (CMS) is also disclosed.

A method of providing views in a camera monitor system (CMS) for a vehicle including a tractor and a trailer includes receiving first and second captured images from first and second cameras that respectively provide first and second fields of view alongside a left side and a right side of the vehicle, the first and second fields of view are other than legally prescribed narrow- or wide-angle views that include the trailer, receiving a third captured image from a centrally located vehicle camera to provide a third field of view in a central blind spot of the vehicle, and simultaneously depicting the first, second and third captured images as discrete, unstitched images on at least one display.

A method includes capturing at least one model image including a conduit between a tractor and a trailer, storing the model image, and classifying the model image as showing one of a connected position or an unconnected position of the conduit. The method includes capturing a second image including the conduit between a tractor and a trailer, comparing the second image to the model image, determining whether the conduit in the second image is in the connected position or the unconnected position based on the comparing, and notifying an operator whether the conduit is in the connected position or the unconnected position based on the determining.

A camera monitor system (CMS) for a vehicle includes a camera configured to record an image feed of an external environment of a vehicle; an electronic display configured to display at least a portion of the image feed; a steering wheel including at least one input device; and processing circuitry operatively connected to memory. The processing circuitry is configured to receive a command from the at least one input device and, based on the command, adjust what is shown on the electronic display, or activate a feature of the camera. A method for a camera monitor system (CMS) is also disclosed.
