Order fulfillment system comprises a first function sorting system comprising first function vehicles for sorting first function articles into first function sort receptacles in response to commands. The system further comprises an ASRS juxtaposed to the first function sorting system such that a footprint occupied by the first function sorting system is adjacent to the footprint occupied by the ASRS. The system further comprises a controller configured to: direct a retrieval mechanism of the article storage and retrieval system to move a storage bin containing a first function article to an output station; and, direct a first function vehicle to transport and deposit the first function article collected from the storage bin at the output station into a first function sort receptacle.

A system includes an article supply location, wherein the article supply location includes a plurality of articles to be sorted, first and second transport vehicles, each having a first position in which an article is stowed about the vehicle and a second position in which the article is deposited into a proximal container. And a control system. The control system is configured to receive an order for a plurality of disparate articles, determine one destination container of a plurality of destination containers to direct the transport vehicle to deposit a selected article, direct the first transport vehicle to transport a selected article to the destination container and deposit the article by manipulation of the first transport vehicle from the first position to the second position for deposit of the selected article in the destination container.

Chamber bank for use in a sorting operation includes chambers for receiving a receptacle therein. Each chamber is defined by a floor, a left wall, a right wall, and a rear wall that together define a receiving space for a receptacle. At least one of the left and right wall is taller than the corresponding abutting side wall of the receptacle received therein. A system assigns a first number of articles occupying a first volume to the receptacle such that the first number of articles overfills the receptacle when all of the first number of articles are deposited thereinto.

System includes a server comprising a receptacle exchange engine, a receptacle, a shelf comprising a plurality of storage locations, and a frame positioned adjacent the shelf. The frame includes a lift traveling about a vertical rail. The vertical rail translating horizontally about two guide tracks arranged parallel to one another. The lift is configured for transferring the receptacle to a storage location of the shelf. System for use in directing a sorting operation includes receptacles configured for receiving articles therein, and a sleeve removably attached to each receptacle such that an upper portion of the sleeve extending upward above a top rim of the receptacle and defining an opening that permits access to the receiving space of the receptacle; and automated transport devices for transporting and depositing articles into the receptacles. The system configured to: assign a first count of articles to a receptacle such that the first count of articles overfills the receptacle and direct the transport devices to transport and deposit the first count of articles into the receptacle after the sleeve is removably attached over a top region of the receptacle.

System includes an article supply location including a plurality of articles, and an overhead rail network with a plurality of rail sections. A self-guided and self-propelled hanging vehicle travels in both directions along the plurality of rail sections. The hanging vehicle has a first position in which a carrier containing at least one selected article is engaged with the hanging vehicle and a second position in which the carrier is detached from the hanging vehicle. The system further includes a controller. The controller determines a first delivery location among a plurality of delivery locations to deliver, with the hanging vehicle, the selected article based on a destination determined for the selected article. The controller further directs delivery of the carrier at the first delivery location by manipulation of the hanging vehicle from the first position to the second position.

System for packing and sorting comprises: a server comprising a memory, a processor, and a sortation engine, an automated packaging device, and a packaging sorting system. The automated packaging device is configured to: receive one or more sorted articles through an opening of a repository of the automated packaging device, and seal the repository to form a package. The package sorting system configured to: direct a package computer controlled vehicle to move to a receiving position about the automated packaging device for receiving the package from the automated packaging device, and direct the package computer controlled vehicle to transport and deposit the received package into a package receptacle.

Method of transporting an article with a computer controlled transport vehicle to a destination includes transporting an article carried by a computer controlled transport vehicle to a destination, wherein a tray, belt, or carrier attached to the computer controlled transport vehicle engages the article. The method further includes determining a characteristic for the article. The method furthermore includes manipulating the tray, belt, or carrier from a first position to a second position to deposit the article at the destination, wherein the manipulation of the tray, belt, or carrier is adjusted based on the characteristic determined for the article to adjust a deposit characteristic of the article.

Order fulfillment system comprises an order sortation system and an article storage and retrieval system positioned directly above the order sortation system. A controller is configured to: receive an order; direct a retrieval mechanism to move a storage bin containing a first article required for the order to an output station; determine a first destination receptacle among a plurality of destination receptacles to deliver, with a computer controlled vehicle, the first article based on a destination determined for the first article; direct collecting, at the output station, of the first article from the storage bin; direct the computer controlled vehicle to transport the first article received at the output station to the first receptacle.
