Provided herein are anode and/or cathode pan assemblies comprising unique manifold, outlet tube, and/or baffle plate configurations; electrochemical cell and/or electrolyzer containing the anode and/or the cathode pan assemblies; and methods to use and manufacture the same.

A method of operating an electrolyzer including an electrochemical cell includes detecting and/or causing a change in an electrical output of an electrolyzer power source electrically connected to an anode and a cathode of the electrochemical cell. The method includes, responsive to the detected and/or caused change in the output, feedforward controlling the electrolyzer to maintain a pressure of the cathode electrolyte output stream gas collector and/or the anode electrolyte output stream gas collector within a predetermined respective pressure range.

A method of operating an electrolyzer includes changing a current density associated with operation of the electrolyzer based on one or more electricity input factors, or one or more hydrogen output factors, or both.

A method comprises applying a slurry to one or more surfaces of a conductive substrate to form a precursor coating and provide a precursor coated substrate, wherein the slurry includes precursor particles comprising one or more precursor compounds in a slurry medium, and electrochemically oxidizing the one or more precursor compounds to chemically convert the one or more precursor compounds to one or more catalyst compounds and form catalyst particles adhered to the one or more surfaces of the conductive substrate to provide a catalyst coated substrate.

An electrolyzer cell comprises a first half cell comprising a housing at least partially enclosing a cell interior, a first electrode coated with a first catalyst coating, wherein the first electrode is coupled to the housing in the cell interior without welding, a second electrode coupled to the housing in the cell interior without welding, and a separator positioned between the first electrode and the second electrode, wherein a voltage is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode.

An electrolyzer system comprises one or more electrolyzer cells each comprising a first half cell with a first electrode and a second half cell with a second electrode and a controller to control a current applied through the one or more electrolyzer cells, wherein the controller is configured to dynamically set the current density within a current density range of from about 150 mA/cm 2 to about 3000 mA/cm 2 , and wherein the controller is configured to set the current density to a first value when a first condition is met and to a second value when a second condition is met.

A method comprises coprecipitating one or more precursor compounds from a solution comprising one or more first metal salts and one or more second salts to produce precipitated precursor particles, forming a slurry of the precipitated precursor particles, applying the slurry to one or more surfaces of a conductive substrate to provide a slurry coated substrate, and baking the slurry coated substrate at specified calcination conductions to convert the one or more precursor compounds of the precipitated precursor particles to spinel particles that are adhered to the one or more surfaces of the conductive substrate, wherein the spinel particles comprise a spinel with the general chemical formula AB 2 O 4 .

An apparatus for water electrolysis includes two or more ministacks electrically connected in series and/or in parallel. Each ministack includes a stacked arrangement of 2 to 20 cells that are electrically connected in series. Each cell includes an anode, a cathode, and a separator between the anode and the cathode. Each cell also includes a fluid flow system permitting anode electrolyte to be added to the cell, flowed in contact with the anode, and removed from the cell, and permitting cathode electrolyte to be added to the cell, flowed in contact with the cathode, and removed from the cell. A single element for a water electrolyzer stack includes a cavity formed between a pan and a current collector.
