A current transformer (CT) monitor receives power data from a metering device operating on a customer premises, the power data characterizing features of electrical power provided to the customer premises. The CT monitor also determines, from the power data, an operational condition of a set of CTs of the metering device installed at the customer premises based on the power data, wherein the operational condition of the set of CTs impacts an ability to accurately calculate a demand of power consumed by the customer premises.

A high frequency data recorder (“HFDR”) can include a first set of contacts, on a first side of the HFDR, that are pluggable into a first meter receptacle of a meter box, wherein the first meter receptacle provides a connection to a power supply and a connection to a load. The HFDR also includes a second set of contacts, on a second side of the HFDR, that form a second meter receptacle. The second meter receptacle provides another connection to the power supply and another connection to the load. The HFDR can further include a processor that accesses a non-transitory machine readable memory that stores instruction that when executed cause the processor to passively measures current downstream from the meter box. The HFDR still further includes a wireless transceiver that wirelessly transmits data characterizing the measured current.

A system for monitoring power flow at a premises can include a smart meter that measures coarse power flow data for the premises. The coarse power flow data characterizes power consumption and/or power generation. The system can also include a power data recorder having a first transceiver that communicates with the smart meter via a first protocol. The power data recorder can have a second transceiver that communicates with a node on a data mesh network via a second protocol. The smart meter transmits the coarse power flow data to a node on a meter mesh network in response to polling for the coarse power flow data, and the smart meter transmits the coarse power flow data to the power data recorder via the first protocol in response to detecting a fault condition or after a time interval has expired. The power data recorder encapsulates the coarse power flow data.

A metering device for monitoring power flow at a premises includes a metering module that measures power flow on powerlines at a premises and provides power flow data characterizing the power flow on the powerlines. The metering device also includes a communication module coupled to the metering module that transmits power flow data to a node on a meter network. The metering device further includes an energy storage element coupled to the metering module and the communication module. The energy storage element provides backup power to the metering module and the communication module in response to a voltage on the powerlines dropping below a first threshold for a time interval exceeding a second threshold, such that the metering module measures the power flow on the powerlines and provide the power flow data for a backup interval of time.

A system for monitoring power flow at a premises can include a smart meter that measures coarse power flow data for the premises. The coarse power flow data characterizes power consumption and/or power generation. The system can also include a power data recorder having a first transceiver that communicates with the smart meter via a first protocol. The power data recorder can have a second transceiver that communicates with a node on a data mesh network via a second protocol. The smart meter transmits the coarse power flow data to a node on a meter mesh network in response to polling for the coarse power flow data, and the smart meter transmits the coarse power flow data to the power data recorder via the first protocol in response to detecting a fault condition or after a time interval has expired. The power data recorder encapsulates the coarse power flow data.

This disclosure relates to monitoring operational parameters of a distribution transformer and an associated surge arrester, and methods of retrofitting the distribution transformer with a transformer parameter monitoring (TPM) system. The TPM system can include a plurality of sensors. A subset of the plurality of sensors can be configured to monitor one or more physical properties of a distribution transformer, and another subset of the plurality of sensors can be configured to monitor a surge arrester associated with the distribution transformer. The TPM system can further include a controller that can be configured to receive captured sensor data from the plurality of sensors, and a communications interface that can be configured to communicate the captured sensor data to a remote system for evaluation thereof to determine one or more operational parameters of the distribution transformer and an amount of deterioration of the surge arrester.
