Disclosed herein is a method comprising: sending radiation pulses (i), i=1, . . . , M one by one toward an object and toward an image sensor as the image sensor moves nonstop in a first direction with respect to the object; and for each value of i, capturing with the image sensor a partial image (i) of the object using radiation of the radiation pulse (i) that has transmitted through the object. The image sensor comprises N active areas. Each active area of the N active areas comprises multiple sensing elements. For each value of i, the radiation pulse (i) has a pulse duration during which the image sensor travels a distance shorter than a width measured in the first direction of any sensing element of the image sensor. M and N are integers greater than 1.

Disclosed herein is an imaging system, comprising: an image sensor which comprises: a system printed circuit board (system PCB); M group printed circuit boards (group PCBs (i), i=1, . . . , M) mounted on a mounting surface of the system PCB; and Ni radiation detectors mounted on the group PCB (i), for i=1, . . . , M, wherein M and Ni, i=1, . . . , M are integers greater than 1, wherein the image sensor is configured to scan a scene in a scanning direction, and wherein, for each group PCB (i), there is not a plane which (A) is parallel to a normal direction of the mounting surface of the system PCB, (B) is parallel to the scanning direction, (C) divides all active areas of the Ni radiation detectors into 2 groups of active areas, and (D) does not intersect any active area of all the active areas of the Ni radiation detectors.

Disclosed herein is system comprising: a radiation source; an image sensor; wherein the image sensor comprises a first radiation detector and a second radiation detector, respectively comprising a planar surface configured to receive radiation from the radiation source; wherein the planar surface of the first radiation detector and the planar surface of the second radiation detector are not parallel; wherein the first radiation detector and the second radiation detector are configured to move to a plurality of positions relative to the radiation source; wherein the image sensor is configured to capture, by using the first radiation detector and the second radiation detector and with the radiation, images of portions of a scene at the positions respectively, and configured to form an image of the scene by stitching the images of the portions; wherein the system is configured to rotate relative to the scene about a third axis.

A system for generating X-rays includes an electron source that generates an electron beam, a support layer with multiple holes and a target layer on the support layer and having target regions respectively over the holes. The electron source can direct the electron beam at the target regions one at a time to generate X-rays from the target regions, while the electron beam goes through the support layer via the holes without hitting any portion of the support layer. Another system for generating X-rays includes an electron source that generates an electron beam; a support layer with multiple support regions; a target layer on the support layer and having target regions respectively over the support regions; and an X-ray detector. The X-ray detector can capture an image of an object using the target X-rays but not using the support X-rays.

Disclosed herein is an apparatus, comprising: an X-ray source; an X-ray detector; wherein the X-ray source is configured to direct an X-ray beam toward a surface at a glancing angle at which the X-ray beam undergoes total external reflection by the surface; wherein a first biological analyte is immobilized to the surface and a first element is attached to the first biological analyte; wherein the X-ray beam is capable of causing emission of characteristic X-rays of the first element; wherein the X-ray detector is configured to receive the characteristic X-rays of the first element but not the X-ray beam reflected by the surface.

Disclosed herein is a backscatter X-ray system comprising: an X-ray source configured to scan a sheet of X-ray across an object, wherein the sheet of X-ray illuminates one line on a surface of the object; a sensor configured to differentiate backscattered X-ray from different spots along the line.

Disclosed herein is a method comprising: moving an image sensor along a first direction among a plurality of positions relative to a scene and capturing partial images of the scene respectively at the plurality of positions; forming an image of the scene from the partial images; wherein the image sensor has an active area and a dead zone; wherein the dead zone extends along a second direction; wherein the second direction is at an angle with the first direction; wherein each point in the scene falls on the dead zone no more than once when the image sensor is at the plurality of positions.

Disclosed herein are apparatuses for detecting radiation and methods of making them. The method comprises forming a recess into a semiconductor substrate, wherein a portion of the semiconductor substrate extends into the recess and is surrounded by the recess; depositing semiconductor nanocrystals into the recess, the semiconductor nanocrystals having a different composition from the semiconductor substrate; forming a first doped semiconductor region in the semiconductor substrate; forming a second doped semiconductor region in the semiconductor substrate; wherein the first doped semiconductor region and the second doped semiconductor region form a p-n junction that separates the portion from the rest of the semiconductor substrate.

Disclosed herein is a method of operating an imaging system which comprises (A) an image sensor comprising (a) a top surface, (b) M physically separate active areas on the top surface, and (c) a dead zone on the top surface and between the M active areas, and (B) a radiation source system which comprises an electron bombardment target, the method comprising: for i=1, . . . , N, sequentially causing emission of X-ray photons (i) from a radiation position (i) by causing electrons to bombard a target surface of the electron bombardment target at the radiation position (i); and for i=1, . . . , N, in response to the emission of the X-ray photons (i), capturing M images (i) of portions (i) of a same object, respectively in the M active areas, resulting in M×N images, wherein each point of the object is captured in at least one image of the M×N images.
