An apparatus for water electrolysis includes two or more ministacks electrically connected in series and/or in parallel. Each ministack includes a stacked arrangement of 2 to 20 cells that are electrically connected in series. Each cell includes an anode, a cathode, and a separator between the anode and the cathode. Each cell also includes a fluid flow system permitting anode electrolyte to be added to the cell, flowed in contact with the anode, and removed from the cell, and permitting cathode electrolyte to be added to the cell, flowed in contact with the cathode, and removed from the cell. A single element for a water electrolyzer stack includes a cavity formed between a pan and a current collector.

An electrolyzer cell comprises a first half cell comprising a housing at least partially enclosing a cell interior, a first electrode coated with a first catalyst coating, wherein the first electrode is coupled to the housing in the cell interior without welding, a second electrode coupled to the housing in the cell interior without welding, and a separator positioned between the first electrode and the second electrode, wherein a voltage is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode.

A method for carrying out electrolysis comprises dynamically changing a current density associated with an operation of an electrolyzer within a range of values of about 0.15 A/cm 2 and 3.0 A/cm2, wherein the changing of the current density associated with the operation of the electrolyzer is in response to a change in demand for electricity within a region where the electrolyzer is located, and wherein the changing of the current density comprises lowering the current density within the range of values of about 0.15 A/cm 2 and 3.0 A/cm 2 when the demand for electricity increases within the region where the electrolyzer is located and raising the current density within the range of values of about 0.15 A/cm 2 and 3.0 A/cm 2 when the demand for electricity decreases within the region where the electrolyzer is located.

An electrochemical cell comprises an anode, an anode electrolyte solution in contact with the anode, wherein the anode electrolyte solution has a first pH, a cathode comprising an ionomer, a cathode electrolyte solution in contact with the cathode wherein the cathode electrolyte solution has a second pH, and a separator positioned between the anode and the cathode, wherein the electrochemical cell is configured to maintain a pH differential between the first pH and the second pH.

Alternatively, the method includes flowing a catholyte from outside the electrochemical cell to contact the cathode of the electrochemical cell, wherein the method is free of flowing an anolyte from outside of the electrochemical cell to contact the anode of the electrochemical cell, and wherein the anode forms oxygen gas. The electrochemical cell includes the anode, the cathode, and an ion exchange membrane between the anode and the cathode.

An electrochemical electrode assembly comprises an electrode having a first electrode face and a second electrode face opposing the first electrode face, a support member configured to be coupled to a housing of an electrolyzer cell, an elastic element comprising a plurality of resilient filaments coupled together into a resilient body, wherein the elastic element is compressed between the support member and the electrode so that the elastic element generates a controlled load against the first electrode face, and a protective insert abutted against the second electrode face along at least a portion of a first edge of the electrode, wherein the protective insert prevents filaments of the elastic element from protruding beyond the second electrode face.
